Rooftop Neon
She can see the neon lights of
a building not too far from here.
She has not noticed them before, but
tonight the surrounding buildings
are dim from slumber and permit
her to admire the red and green
neon shapes above its hotel sign,
wishing to distinguish itself
in the night and foggy evenings.
She does not live there. She does not
know what color carpets adorn
the halls and rooms or what the view
is like from the rooftop or if
a gym is hidden in the basement
or if any stage shows are tonight
or if the rooms are all adjoined
so families can rest easy—
She only knows that from here the
rooftop lights are red and green.
